In 2020, Dyslexia Victoria Support asked parents one simple question: Who will teach my child to read? Over 600 families responded.
This survey captured the lived experiences of parents across Victoria whose children are struggling to learn to read, write, and spell—often without adequate support from their school. It highlighted what families are seeing on the ground: delays in intervention, poor-quality learning plans, under-trained teachers, and education approaches that don’t meet their child’s needs.
The findings weren’t surprising to those of us living through it, but they were confronting. Families described the emotional toll of watching their children fall behind, lose confidence, and feel like they’ve failed—when it’s the system that failed them.
This report is more than just numbers. It’s a call for change from parents who are tired of being told to wait and see. It lays out what’s going wrong, what’s needed, and why early, evidence-based literacy instruction matters.
