Our Mission

What drives us

Dyslexia Victoria Support (DVS) is a volunteer-run community made up of parents, carers, teachers, allied health professionals, and others who have experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating literacy difficulties. We’re here to support families, push for better teaching practices in schools, and make sure no one is left to figure it out on their own.

We're not a service provider or a tutoring business; we're a comunity group that grew out of lived experience and a shared determination to make the system fairer and more effective for all children.

What We Stand For
We advocate for teaching practices that are clear, consistent, and grounded in what research and experience show works. We support the use of:

  • Structured teaching of reading and spelling,

  • Systematic phonics,

  • Decodable texts, and

  • Explicit instruction in all areas of literacy.

We do not support the use of unproven or non-evidence-based interventions, including coloured overlays, vision therapy, or learning styles approaches. Families deserve clear, factual information, not false hope.

What We Do
Our work includes:

  • Sharing resources and guidance to help families understand their rights,

  • Supporting parents to advocate for their children at school,

  • Hosting workshops and sharing practical advocacy tools developed by experienced members of our community,

  • Promoting professional learning for teachers and schools,

  • Making formal submissions to education departments and reviews, and

  • Building community online and in person through our social media channels.

  • Everything we do is designed to be helpful, honest, and easy to understand, because many of us have been where you are now.

Our Impact
Since starting in 2014, we’ve grown into the largest state-based dyslexia advocacy group in Australia. Our team was awarded the Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champions Award in 2018 for our work supporting families and raising awareness.

We’ve contributed to major education and policy conversations in Victoria and nationally, and our voice continues to grow thanks to the strength of the families we support.
